How to use the character counter
- Paste or type your text into the box below.
- Characters with and without spaces, bytes, words and lines are calculated in real time.
- Enter a target number of characters to see how many remain.
How the character counter works
The character count is found by counting the entered string character by character. Characters without spaces excludes spaces and line breaks, and characters made of several code points, such as emoji, are counted as the one character you see. The byte count depends on the service, so two values are shown. In UTF-8, a Korean character is 3 bytes and letters and digits are 1 byte, while in the EUC-KR encoding used by older input forms a Korean character is 2 bytes. The manuscript page count is the character count including spaces divided by 200 and rounded up. The text you enter is processed only in your browser and never sent to a server.
With or without spaces, what is the difference?
Even for the same text, each organization or site counts either with or without spaces. In the with-spaces count, spaces and line breaks count as characters, so the difference can be large when a limit is tight. Always check the submitter's rule first and look at the matching number.
Tips
- When checking a character limit on a cover letter or application, first see whether spaces are counted.
- The target feature is useful when there is a minimum length, such as for a blog post or a report.
- For places with byte limits, such as text messages or notifications, check using the byte count.
- Pasting the final version once more before submitting helps avoid mistakes.
Notes & limitations
Each service may count characters slightly differently. Right before submitting, also check the number shown by that site's own input box.
FAQ
How is the count without spaces calculated?
It is the number of remaining characters after removing spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Why are there two byte counts?
UTF-8 and EUC-KR count Korean characters with different numbers of bytes, so both are shown so you can use the value that matches the recipient's rule.
Is my text saved?
No. It is calculated only in your browser and is neither sent to a server nor stored.
