How to use the typing speed and accuracy test

  1. Choose the language (Korean or English) and the mode (30 s, 60 s, 120 s or finish the text).
  2. Start typing the text shown above into the box and the timer starts automatically.
  3. Correct characters turn green and wrong ones turn red. When the test ends you see your speed, accuracy, error rate, backspace count and a speed-over-time graph.

The text is shuffled every time, so you measure real typing skill instead of a memorized sentence. Press "Retry same text" if you want another go at the same passage.

How speed and error rate are calculated

For English, the number of correctly typed characters is divided by 5 and converted to words per minute (WPM). 250 correct characters in 60 seconds is 50 WPM. For Korean, the strokes (the consonant and vowel keys pressed for each syllable) are added up and converted to strokes per minute. If the strokes of all correctly typed syllables add up to 320 in 60 seconds, that is 320 strokes per minute. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the text, and the error rate is 100% minus accuracy. If you typed 250 characters and 240 were right, accuracy is 96% and the error rate is 4%. Because speed counts only the correctly typed characters, low accuracy also pulls your speed down.

Tips for practice

  • Raise accuracy before speed. If you practice typing slowly without mistakes, speed follows naturally.
  • Keep your fingers on the home position and practice without looking down at the keys; the difference grows the longer you type.
  • Relax your wrists and shoulders and take breaks during long sessions. Stop right away if your wrists hurt.
  • Measure several times under the same conditions and look at the average. One result can swing a lot with your condition and the text.

Things to know about the results

The results are reference numbers for practice, not an official certificate score. The same person can get different results on different keyboards, input methods (IME) and devices. The error rate is based on the text left in the box when the test ends, so mistakes you corrected along the way are not counted; the backspace count is shown next to it instead. Average typing speeds depend heavily on practice and on how they are measured, so it is hard to give a single number. Rather than comparing yourself with others, use it to see how much you improve over your own earlier results.

FAQ

How are Korean strokes counted?

The number of consonant and vowel keys needed for a syllable is counted. For example 한 is 3 strokes (ㅎ·ㅏ·ㄴ), 와 is 3 (ㅇ·ㅗ·ㅏ) and 닭 is 4 (ㄷ·ㅏ·ㄹ·ㄱ). Double consonants count as one stroke. Programs use different rules, so the numbers can differ from other typing sites.

Does fixing a mistake remove it from the error rate?

Yes. The tool compares the text left in the box with the original when the test ends. A letter you mistyped and then corrected is not counted as an error, but the number of times you pressed backspace is shown separately. Many backspaces suggest your real accuracy is lower than the speed suggests.

How is English WPM calculated?

Correctly typed characters are divided by 5 to get "words", then converted to words per minute. A word is conventionally 5 characters including the space. For example 250 correct characters in 60 seconds gives (250 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 minute = 50 WPM.
