Values are approximations for a typical serving and can vary a lot with recipe, brand and portion size.

How to use the food calorie calculator

  1. Type a food name in the search box or narrow the list with the category buttons.
  2. Tap a food you ate to add it to "My meal". Tapping the same food again adds 1 to the quantity, and the − and + buttons change it in steps of 0.5.
  3. The total calories are calculated at once. If you enter your own calorie goal, you also see the percentage of the goal and the calories left (or over).

For foods that are not on the list, enter a name and calories under "Add your own" to include them in the total.

How the total is calculated

The total calories of a meal is the sum of each food's calories per serving multiplied by the quantity you ate. For example, a bowl of cooked rice (310 kcal), a bowl of kimchi stew (230 kcal) and one fried egg (90 kcal) add up to 310 + 230 + 90 = 630 kcal. If you ate only half a bowl of rice, change the quantity to 0.5 and it counts as 155 kcal.

Limits of the values

The values in this calculator are approximations for a typical serving of foods commonly eaten in Korea. The same gimbap differs by its fillings and the same fried chicken differs by its coating and sauce. Restaurant and delivery food varies a lot in portion size between shops, so real values can be higher or lower. If you need exact numbers, check the nutrition label on the package or an official food composition database. This tool is best used to get a rough idea.

Things to know

  • The energy a person needs each day depends on age, sex, body size and activity. This tool does not tell you a recommended amount, so enter a goal based on advice from a doctor or dietitian.
  • Calories are only one side of nutrition. Also look at protein, fat, carbohydrates, sodium and the overall balance of your meals.
  • Cutting calories too far can harm your health. If you need to change your diet or have a medical condition, talk to a professional.
  • Add easily forgotten items such as drinks, snacks, sauces and cooking oil yourself so they are included in the total.

FAQ

Why do the numbers differ from other apps?

The same dish can differ a lot depending on the recipe, amount of ingredients, brand and bowl size. The values here are approximations for a common serving, so for exact numbers check the nutrition label on the package or an official database.

How much soup or broth is assumed?

For soups, stews and noodles the value assumes a typical amount of solids and broth. If you leave a lot of broth, the real intake can be lower.

My food is not on the list.

Add its name and calories under "Add your own" and it will be included in the total. For packaged food, enter the calories per serving shown on the nutrition label.
