How to use the burnout self-check
- Read the 10 statements and pick the answer closest to your situation over the past month. There are no right answers, so do not overthink it.
- Choose from four levels, from "Never" to "Almost always". Once all questions are answered, press the result button to see your scores.
- Look at your burnout risk score, work-life balance index and estimated remaining energy, then read the comment for your level and the small adjustments suggested for this week.
- Take it again when your situation changes to compare. Your answers are never sent to a server.
How the scores are calculated
The questions split into five about your work environment and five about how you feel physically and mentally. The environment items ask about overtime, after-hours contact, time off, breaks and workload. The state items ask about morning fatigue, reduced satisfaction, irritability and numbness, trouble concentrating and fatigue that rest does not fix. Each item scores 0 to 3, so ten items add up to a maximum of 30.
The burnout risk score is that total converted to a 100-point scale, and the estimated remaining energy is 100 minus the risk score. The work-life balance index uses only the five environment items and flips them so that a more relaxed environment scores higher. The questions were written for this site based on the general features of burnout; they are not a commercial questionnaire or a clinically validated instrument.
What burnout actually is
The World Health Organization describes burn-out in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance from one's job or feelings of negativism or cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. The WHO states clearly that burn-out is an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition, and that the term refers to the work context.
The questions here loosely follow those three features. Still, burnout comes from the work environment and personal circumstances together, so no single score can define your state. Some people struggle even with a low score, and a high score may simply reflect a temporary busy period.
Working conditions differ by country, so check the rules that apply to you, such as limits on working hours, paid leave and protection against workplace harassment. If the environment is a major factor, your company's internal channels or your local labor authority may be able to help.
What to do after seeing your result
- If your score is low, focus on protecting your current finishing time and time-off habits.
- If it is in the middle, pick one high-scoring item and actually reduce it this week. Changing everything at once rarely lasts.
- If it is high, adjust your workload, secure rest time and talk to someone you trust about how you are doing.
- If fatigue, sleeplessness or low motivation last two weeks or more, consider seeing a doctor or a counselor.
- If you feel overwhelmed or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a local crisis service immediately. In the US you can call or text 988.
FAQ
Is the burnout risk score a probability?
No. It adds your 0-3 answers to 10 questions and converts them to a 100-point score. It is not the probability that you are burned out, but a rough reference for how close your current state is to being worn down.
How is the work-life balance index calculated?
It flips the score of the first five questions, which ask about overtime, after-hours contact, time off, breaks and workload. The more relaxed your work environment, the higher the index. It looks only at your work environment, separately from the risk score.
My score is low but I still feel exhausted.
This test looks at only ten simple items, so it cannot capture everything about your situation. If hard times last, talk to a professional regardless of the score.
Are my answers saved on a server?
No. Answers and results are calculated on this page only and are never sent or stored. They disappear when you close the page or press Start over.
Will the result change if I retake it?
Yes. Your score naturally differs between busy and calm periods. It works well as a monthly check at the same time of the month so you can compare changes.
