How to use the batch file renamer
- Choose or drop files. You can add hundreds at once and remove unwanted ones from the list.
- Type the new name and set the start number, digits, the character between name and number, the number position and the numbering order. The new names in the list update as you change settings.
- Press Rename and save as ZIP and a ZIP with the files under their new names downloads. Unzip it to use them.
How the names are changed
This tool reads each file as it is, gives it a new name and puts it into a ZIP file. So photos, documents, videos and any other type of file keep their content and only the name changes. Files are processed only inside your browser and never sent to a server.
A new name is made by adding a number to the name you type. A number after the name gives trip1, trip2, and a number before gives 1trip. Numbers start at the start number and rise by one, and choosing digits pads with zeros such as 001 and 002.
Numbers follow one of these orders: the order you added, by name, by modified date or by file size. By name recognizes number size so photo2 comes before photo10. In the rare case of identical names, _1 is added so they do not collide.
Uses and tips
It is most used to organize trip or event photos by date, or to turn camera names such as IMG_0001 into names that are easy to recognize. Hundreds of photos can be numbered in one go.
It also suits cases that need a naming rule, such as shop product images or blog images. With matching digits, files stay in order when sorted by name in Windows and macOS.
When you order images to bundle into a PDF, naming them with numbers first keeps the order clear when you add them. The same works for images extracted from a PDF.
To match image size or ratio in bulk, use the Batch Image Cropper, and to bundle images into a PDF, use the Image to PDF converter.
For project or homework files, putting a number before the name shows them in working order in a folder, which is good for tidying. Including a date in the new name also makes them easy to search for later. Note that characters used in folder paths cannot be used in a name.
Even if different kinds of files are mixed in one folder, extensions are kept, so numbering them all at once is fine. If numbering is by name, numbers follow the name regardless of type, so check before adding if order matters.
Files are processed only inside the device and never uploaded, so work documents and personal photos can be organized with peace of mind. Because the ZIP is built in the device, large files take a moment. If you do not like the names, change the settings and save again, and the originals always stay as they are.
Tips for tidy results
- If you have more than 100 files, pad numbers to 3 digits or more.
- If date order matters, choose numbering by modified date.
- Do not use characters that file names cannot contain (\ / : * ? " < > |) in the new name.
- Before saving, check the start and end of the right-hand names in the list.
- After unzipping, keep your originals separately if you like the new names.
FAQ
Does the original file name change?
No. A browser cannot rename the files on your computer directly, so you download copies with the new names in one ZIP file. The originals stay as they are. Unzip it to get the files with their new names.
In what order are numbers added?
The default is the order you added them. If you choose by name, numbers are sorted naturally so photo2 comes before photo10, and you can also sort by modified date or file size. The list shows the original name on the left and the new name on the right so you can check before saving.
Can I pad numbers to two digits like 01, 02?
Yes. Choose 2, 3 or 4 digits in the number digits list, or let it decide automatically for the file count. With padding, files stay in order even when sorted by name in Windows or macOS.
Does the extension change too?
The extension is kept as it is. You can only use the option that turns uppercase extensions into lowercase, and the file format itself is never converted.
How many files can I add at once?
Up to 1,000 files and 300MB in total at a time. If you have more or larger files, split them into batches. Because the ZIP is built in the browser, a smaller amount can still take long depending on device memory.
Notes & limitations
A browser cannot rename the files on your computer directly, so copies with new names download as a ZIP. Originals stay as they are, so organize them yourself if needed. Very many or large files may take long or fail depending on device memory.
