How to use the to-do board
- Type a task in the box under any column and press Enter to create a card. Example cards are included at first, so feel free to delete them and start fresh.
- When you start a task, drag its card to Doing, and move it to Done when finished. On a phone, use the ◀ ▶ buttons on the card to send it to a neighboring column.
- Pressing the round button on a card changes the color of its side stripe. Set your own rules, such as red for urgent and yellow for waiting, to tell cards apart at a glance.
- You can rename columns and use Add column to create ones such as Review or On hold. If the board matters, download a file with Export backup.
Why kanban makes work easier
As a to-do list grows, "what should I do now?" gets blurry. Kanban splits work by status and makes it visible, so tasks not yet started, in progress and finished are arranged on one screen. When too many cards pile up in Doing, it can also signal that you have started more than you can finish.
This board works only inside your browser and nothing is sent to a server. No sign-up or login is needed, which makes it easy to jot down personal plans or work notes. It does not sync automatically with other devices, so use a backup file when moving it.
Ways to use it
The simplest way is to start with three columns: To do, Doing and Done. Keep only the things you must do today in Doing and no more than three or four at a time, and it is easier to focus. The small sense of achievement when you move a finished card to Done also helps.
It suits tasks with steps, such as housework, moving, trip preparation, exam study or blog writing. For a trip, create columns such as Booking, Packing and Local plans and move cards to track progress. When a big team tool feels like too much, a light personal board is enough.
Keep cards short. One line ending in a verb, like "Call the clinic to book", is the easiest to act on. Splitting a big task into several small cards lowers the burden and increases how often you move cards to Done, so progress becomes visible.
Once a week, skim the board, clear done cards and check cards that have been stuck for a long time. A card that keeps being postponed is a chance to ask whether it is really needed or can be split smaller. Downloading a backup before clearing done cards also lets you look back at what you did that week.
Tips for good use
- Try to keep Doing at three or four cards or fewer.
- Write one action per card. Split big tasks into several cards.
- Give colors a meaning, such as red for urgent, yellow for waiting and green for easy.
- On a shared computer, do not leave personal content; download a backup after using it and then clear the board.
- To move to another device, use Export backup and Import backup.
FAQ
What is a kanban board?
Kanban is a way of turning tasks into cards, placing them in columns such as To do, Doing and Done, and moving them as their status changes. It shows what you are working on and what is stuck at a glance, so it is widely used from personal plans to team projects.
How do I move cards?
On a computer, drag a card and drop it in another column. On phones and tablets where dragging is awkward, use the ◀ ▶ buttons under a card to move to a neighboring column and ▲ ▼ to reorder within the column.
Where is my board saved?
Only inside the browser you are using. It is not uploaded to a server, so it will not appear on another device, and it disappears if you clear browser data. For an important board, download a file with Export backup and restore it with Import backup when needed.
Can I rename columns?
Yes. Click the name at the top of a column to edit it, and use Add column to create ones such as Review or On hold. As long as at least one column remains, delete extra columns with the × button.
How do I tidy done cards?
Cards in the Done column are shown struck through. When they pile up, Clear done removes them all at once; to keep them, download a backup first.
